HISTORY – GROUP OF THREE

120ft climb to free trapped flag
The Saltire overlooks the site of the Battle of Bannockburn.

A climber has scaled a 120ft pole to free a saltire flag that became trapped at half mast over the site of the Battle of Bannockburn.

The National Trust for Scotland said the “rescue” was necessary after a supporting cable snapped and trapped the flag.

The site marks the spot where Robert the Bruce famously killed Sir Henry de Bohun with his axe in 1314.

The climb was made by Lewis Harrop, from Ballachulish-based firm Geo Rope.

Mr Harrop, who is also a member of his local mountain rescue team, was aided by two other colleagues who repaired the cable and returned the flag to the top of the pole.

Scott McMaster, property manager at the heritage centre, said the trio had performed a vital task.

He said: “Just as the famous Gael, Angus Og, Lord of the Isles came to Robert the Bruce’s side at Bannockburn, it was the turn of three other highland heroes to do the same almost 700 years later.

“We are very grateful to these generous gents who have saved our saltire, so that it flies again over this historic site.” FROM

FAMOUS FOTO FACE

NEW YORK – A 90-year-old who says she’s the woman being kissed by a sailor in Times Square in one of World War II’s most famous photographs reunited in town with the Navy on Sunday — days before she is to serve as grand marshal of the city’s Veterans Day parade.

Edith Shain of Los Angeles, donning a white nurse’s uniform like the one she wore back in 1945, went to see the musical revival of “South Pacific” and posed for pictures, being hoisted off her feet on stage by five of the actors in their Navy whites. THE STORY

AMTRAK

Passengers disembark from Amtrak’s Sunset Limited at its final stop in New Orleans, Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008. Originally running from Los Angeles to Orlando, Fla., Amtrak suspended service on the line east of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina damaged railroad tracks and train stations along the Gulf Coast. Recent Amtrak legislation passed by Congress requires that the railroad return the train to full service along the repaired line.

Yep – I was ahead of the game yesterday. Had some really great posts to place on this page – - BUT – - Typical for this writer – - The Page area itself wasn’t set up to accept my material. This in mind – I just went to bed – - Didn’t want to devote the hours required to get started.

NOW – - The page arrangement, themes, etc. is mostly done and it’s time for bed.  See ya all tomorrow – Thanks for stopping!
